Capitol Air is a modern full service flight school and aircraft rental company.  As a Cessna Pilot Center, we train in brand new Cessna 172SPs and a Cessna 182T model which boast the latest avionics, and are well known as the safest trainers on the market.  We also have a G-1000 Skyhawk located at Bay Bridge.  We also have a PA-28R-201 for anyone interested in obtaining their complex endorsement or Commercial Certificate.  Our professional flight instructors, both full-time and part-time have accumulated thousands of hours of flight instruction.  Our goal is to train the student from the beginning stages of being a Private Pilot through Instrument, Commercial, Instructor and ATP ratings under both Part 61 and Part 141. 

Our primary focus is to train and serve our customers in the safest and most enjoyable aviation environment.  Our training philosophy is simple: be safe, be responsible and have fun.  Our aircraft are well maintained through 50hr, 100hr and Annual inspections that surpass FAA regulations. We now offer on-the-field maintenance for helicopter and aircraft.  As well as being one of the leading flight training facilities in the Washington D.C. and Baltimore metropolitan area, we also offer aerial tours over historic Annapolis and the beautiful Chesapeake bay, and $59.00 Be-A-Pilot Discovery flights for those potential pilots. 

Capitol Air has become a  training facility for the US Naval Academy.  The Naval midshipmen train under FAR Part 141 approved Introductory Flight Screening ( IFS ) program.  Our instructors take the midshipmen from zero hours to 25 hours.  We also train Naval Flight Officers ( NFO ), who learn to navigate using instruments and conducting instrument approaches in less than 13 hours. Moreover, The Naval Flight Team also uses Capitol Air aircraft for national competition.

Capitol Air is located at two convenient locations: Tipton Airport and Bay Bridge Airport. Both airports are located within the Washington ADIZ and must follow certain procedures.  If you are coming to Tipton or Bay Bridge Airports for the first time, be sure to ask for the proper procedures before flying in with Flight Service.

Both airports are a short drive from Washington D.C., Baltimore, Annapolis and Anne Arundel, Prince George's, Howard, Queen Anne's and Kent Counties.  Tipton Airport is located near the intersection of  the Baltimore-Washington Parkway ( MD 295 ), MD198, and MD 32.  Bay Bridge Airport is located just on the east side of the Bay Bridge.  Both airports offer wide 3,000 foot runways, multiple GPS instrument approaches and 24/7 fuel services, therefore making Capitol Air one of the most accessible flight schools in the area.

Flight Training

What does it take to become a pilot?

• You must be at least 17 years old to take the private pilot practical and written test with a FAA designated examiner. To prepare for this practical test, you must first pass a 60 question knowledge exam where you demonstrate your knowledge of aerodynamics, medical, weather, navigation and rules and regulations.

• You can also prepare for the knowledge exam by self-study, formal ground school privately with your instructor or with a group. Your preparation can be done prior to or concurrently with flight instruction. Flight instruction can begin at any time and will prepare you to meet the flight proficiency requirements.

• Generally, you will need at least 60 hours of flight training to become a pilot. If you fly twice a week, you can complete the training in four to six months. The national average is 65 flight hours for applicants taking the test.

How much will it cost?

• Instruction for Private, Instrument, Commercial, Instructor or ATP certificates is $42.00 an hour.  The price for aircraft rental is based on type and year of the aircraft.  All prices are "wet" ( including fuel ).  For more information on the total cost to attain your Private License, click on the following hyperlink: Price Sheet

• Computer Based Instruction ( CBI ) kits include texts, and all navigation and computational materials, $299.00.

Where can I take the Knowledge Exam?

• We are currently not administering any CATS testing at the present time.

How do I start my career as a Professional Pilot?

• Capitol Air is affiliated with Utah Valley State College.  Through the Global Aviation Degree Program  you can attain your Associate's or Bachelor's Degree online, while completing your pilot training at Capitol Air.

• Financial aid is available to qualifying students.  Interest rates are as low as 3.9%.  Call for more details.

Once you get your private pilot license, you have it for life, provided you remain physically qualified. Fees are paid as you fly, so you can build up flight hours and proficiency at your own pace.
